Catholic churches in the Leigh area covers the town of Leigh and the smaller towns and villages surrounding it. It was formerly known as Leigh Deanery.
2011 The area was divided into two parishes, which were created on 8th September 2011: the Parish of St Edmund Arrowsmith and the Parish of St Margaret Clitherow.
The Parish of St Edmund Arrowsmith was created out of the former parishes of St Joseph's, Sacred Heart, Our Lady of the Rosary and Twelve Apostles, Leigh. The Parish of St Margaret Clitherow was created out of the former parishes of St Richard's (Atherton), Sacred Heart (Hindsford), St Ambrose Barlow (Astley), St Gabriel's (Higher Folds) and Holy Family (Boothstown).
2018 the Deanery was extended to also include St Lewis's, Croft, St Catherine's and All Saints, Golborne and Sacred Heart, Hindley Green.
2019, re-organisation of the Deanery resulted in the closure of the churches of Our Lady's, Leigh and Twelve Apostles, Leigh. The Deanery was then split in to 4 Parishes comprising Parish of St Edmund Arrowsmith, covering the Leigh area; Parish of St Margaret Clitherow, covering Astley and Boothstown area; Parish of St John Rigby, created from the churches of St Richard's Atherton and Sacred Heart, Hindley Green and churches to the south of Leigh of St Lewis's, Croft, St Catherine's and All Saints, Golborne and Sacred Heart, Hindley Green.
New mass times were scheduled to ensure it was possible for 3 priests to cover all churches in case of sickness or absence. These can be seen below.
2021 Part of the Pastoral Plan following on from the Archdiocesan Synod in June 2021 led to the reorganisation of the structures within the Archdiocese. This reflected the changes which have taken place over the years and looked towards having more effective administration of the Archdiocese. As a result of this Leigh Deanery was merged with Wigan Deanery to form Wigan and Leigh Deanery
The Deanery is served by a team of priests and deacons working together across the area who meet several times a year under the current leadership of Fr Gordon Abbs
We are lucky to have a Secondary School and eleven primary schools in the Leigh area. Leigh area Schools
